Event Description

What happened to the practical know-how our grandparents had? In our modern industrial age, cheap energy, factory automation and transnational economics have allowed us to out-source almost every aspect of our lives, including how we feed, clothe, and entertain ourselves.

But a new wave is sweeping the country. People are recognizing the joy, satisfaction and security of being able to provide for our own needs, shifting from dependence on giant corporations to a healthy interdependence with our local community.

In partnership with Ravenna Eckstein and Meadowbrook Community Centers, Sustainable NE Seattle is organizing a community skills fair called "Hands On!" Forty folks from our neighborhoods have stepped up to share skills such as food preservation, grafting, tool repair, and making clothes.

The workshops are free. Registration is recommended for the specific workshops you want to take (see the Workshop Schedule link above). The event takes place February 12, 2011. The skills workshops are being held in two community centers simultaneously. Vanpools will be available.

Let's re-learn the skills our grandparents knew.

10 am – 5 pm, Ravenna and Meadowbrook Community Centers (see detailed schedule for location of specific workshops) Fun, family-friendly skills workshops with hands-on demos. Learn a variety of practical skills related to food growing and preparation, crafting soap and medicinal herbs, household repairs, and non-electronic entertainment.

5 – 6:30 pm, Meadowbrook Community Center
Community potluck. Bring something to share. If possible, bring your own plates and utensils.

6:30 – 8pm, Meadowbrook Community Center
Square dance with live music by The Tall Boys

HANDS ON Community Skills Fair – UPDATE
Well, we are coming down the home stretch in the planning for our HANDS ON Community Skills Fair. We have many interesting sessions in the schedule. However we have a couple of areas that we would like to round out with a few more offerings. The instructors we are still looking for are:
  1. dance for fun,
  2. games,
  3. simple clothing repair, darning
  4. making lotions and shampoos,
  5. making soup,
  6. kids cooking basics lessons, (teacher pending)
  7. tree grafting,
  8. art with found objects; e.g. making notecards, print making, repurposing for sake of beauty,
  9. grinding grains to make different kinds of flour,
  10. organic veggie gardening; e.g. compost, vertical gardens, techniques.
A session can be as long as you need it to be in a 10 am- 5pm day but most sessions are between 30 min and 90 min. If you teach, you can still have time in the day to take a class for yourself. So, please take a moment to think about it and let us know this week so we can finish the schedule. And if you know any teens that would like to teach a class, we are happy to add them to the schedule too.
Please contact me or Susan Gregory
