Yesterday, I attended a very informative and fun presentation by Debbie Goetz of the Office of Emergency Management - which was a part of Sustainable Wallingford's Emergency Preparedness guild monthly meetings.  It was well attended (almost 30 people), mostly from the neighborhood. Her presentation included instruction in the S.N.A.P. program, (Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare) - the next level up after household preparedness measures are taken - an adjunct to the Blockwatch program which I think we really need to activate in Seattle on a greater scale.  It's a great system, which connects us with city services - services that need our support and volunteer participation.


So wonderful to see how many people are interested in being a part of this guild.  I was actually astounded when I checked back after a couple days from being away from the computer for a few days.  Looking forward to working with everyone.

I was advised by a Wallingford emergency prep activist (who has been doing it for some time now) that the Summit on April 9th (see .doc above for details) would be very worthwhile to attend. Lots of valuable info. I have a potential conflict that day but since there are 18 members here I am sure a couple of us can get there.

About carpooling to the Summit at the Office of Emergency Management (see the link at the very top of this Comment page which tells more about it) -- I'm happy to pick up Ken and Janet, both who have expressed interest in going.  I have room for one more if anyone wants to come along.  We'll need to leave fairly early since we don't want to miss the 8:30 orientation to the Emergency Hub idea, so Ken - how about if I pick you up in front of your house around 7:50 or so, and Janet - how about if I pick you up at around 8:00?  I'll email you about this too to confirm.

I was really energized this weekend about getting the ball rolling in our 'preparedness' effort.  After seeing the movie, "Cascadia- the Hidden Fire", at the Meaningful Movies on Friday, and attending the Summit meeting yesterday at the Office of Emergency Management,  I really see the importance of taking action - individually, on my block, in my neighborhood, in our northeast region, and with the city.  The compelling question is not 'if'', but 'when', and it appears that the 'when' could be sooner than later. Through this effort,  we have a great opportunity to build RESILIENCE at all these levels --which, I think is  probably the most important thing we can do in our lives right now for many reasons - not just for disasters.  It is so encouraging to see the numbers of people who are joining this guild.  I hope we can all manage to meet on a regular basis to support one another in our desire to build resiliency.  I have set up a scheduling tool, called the 'Doodle', which will hopefully allow the most of us to get together soon.  I sent a message to all members with the link which I hope will work, so that you can let me know your availability and a time can then be set up.  Thanks so much.

Re the shut off valve.

At Friday night's showing of CASCADIA, Mark, from Seattle Emergency, told us NOT to shut off the gas because we would not be able to turn it on ourselves and might have to wait a long time before the gas company could do so.

What do you think about this?

The valve I got is easy to reset w/o special tools or knowledge. I don't know why people persist in advising that shutting off the gas is bad. This is proven technology and cheap insurance to keep your house from burning down after an earthquake. All it takes is 1 little gas leak and 1 small spark. And to prevent it is a $300 valve and 1/2 hour by a mechanical contractor.

As soon as we get a day of the week that is best for a group meeting we can get a room held at Ravenna Eckstein Comm Center and arrange for Mark Howard from the Office of Emergency Management to be there. Plus I would like to get any NE area community council folks that have an emergency effort happening, to the meeting so we can capitalize on the most human energy as possible. If you are active in your neighborhood council and know the emergency coordinator please extend an invitation to join us.
