What parts of our mission are you interested in (for example, growing food/food security, appropriate energy technologies, transportation, community building, etc.)?
building community through supporting local food systems, environmental justice, fostering a sense of place.
How do you see yourself being involved with Sustainable NE Seattle? What skills, talents and passions are you willing to share?
Hi! As Keith Mastenbrook's wife I've been on the sidelines watching SUSNE's efforts since he became involved with the group a couple of years ago. Living part-time in Vancouver BC it was difficult for me to commit to much with the group. But now that I'm home from BC I'd like to get more involved. Currently I'm working as a research assistant for study that's looking at urban foraging and gleaning practices in the city of Seattle and that's got me excited about doing more in my own neighborhood, for example by organizing a gleaning group in our neighborhood. My research leads me to believe that there are a lot of untapped opportunities for tending and harvesting feral fruit in the neighborhood. By fostering community and providing healthy foods to those in need, gleaning groups are a great way to "feed two birds with one berry," so to speak.

Urban foraging and botanical illustration class

Say friends - I'll be co-teaching a class on "Urban Foraging and Botanical Illustration" at the Frye Art Museum for three consecutive Saturdays in October. In the mornings, we'll be visiting three different special places to gather plants a

nd learn about the social and ecological histories at each one. The afternoons will be devoted to studio time, where Justin Gibbens will teach basic drawing and painting skills. …
