Sustainable NE Seattle

Connecting for a sustainable community

Another milestone in redefining Sustainable NE Seattle!

A huge "thank you" goes out to the 30+ people who participated in our "(Re)Building Sustainable NE Seattle" event this past Sunday! Attendees sacrificed a gorgeous Spring Sunday afternoon to help determine how the organization will be structured, now that a Board of Directors is about to be elected and the Steering Committee will turn over the reins.

After four hours of presentations and thoughtful discussion, the assembly came to a unanimous vote for the favored proposal. Sustainable NE will continue to include multiple working groups and projects, each of which has their own decision-making authority within their respective domains. Representatives from these working groups and projects will meet in a Council that also includes the Board of Directors to decide on strategies for the growth and operation of the organization as a whole.

We have already filed the articles of incorporation and bylaws with the State of Washington, and our application to be recognized as a non-profit has been submitted to the IRS. The next big milestone is the election of the Board and the transition to the new structure this May.

What remains to be done by then is a draft of our operating policies. This document will go beyond the bare minimum description of our corporate structure in the bylaws, and will explain the relationships between the roles of the Board, the Council, and the Working Groups. Many of these details have yet to be decided.

That's why we need your help between now and May, to consider various options and craft the policy document. We have planned three meetings for the Policy Draft Committee (email us for the locations):

1. Policy Draft Committee Kickoff
March 31, 7-9 pm

2. Policy Draft Committee Update and General Meeting:
Thursday April 17, 6:30 – 9 pm

3. Policy Draft Committee Wrap-up
Monday April 28, 7-9 pm

In-between these meetings, volunteers will meet in small groups on their own to craft separate pieces of the document.

If you can help with this process, please email us at and let us know!

We hope to see you there!

It was an excellent event, and an awesome discussion. I felt like by the end (and most of us made it the whole time!) we had a clear idea of what was possible and what we wanted. It's so empowering to be part of a group that can generate that kind of energy.
