Sustainable NE Seattle

Connecting for a sustainable community

Got Solar? Let's Solarize NE Seattle!

Solarize Seattle is a neighborhood based bulk-buying approach to  solar electric installations.  It is based on a successful project in Portland called...wait for it...SolarizePortland!

A local non-profit, NW Seed is bringing the concept to Seattle. They recently held a successful pilot in the Queen Anne neighborhood.  You can get more information at:  www.solarizeseattle.org.

Some neighbors and I, in NE Seattle, are putting together an application to become the next part of the City of Seattle to become Solarized.

I have requested that Sustainable NE Seattle be a partner in this application. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Rebecca for this announcement.  This approach has been very effective in Portland.  The initial Seattle pilot was in the Queen Anne neighborhood.  I'm looking forward to having my fellow neighbors in NE Seattle help organize and get the word out.  Check out details at www.solarizeseattle.org, or contact me or Rebecca with questions.

I am happy to announce that the NE Corridor (98105, 98115, 98125) was just selected by NW Seed as one of the next Solarize Seattle project neighborhoods!

In order to move forward we need to put together a community board to do the bidding and planning work, but also to start the process of publicizing.

Our goal is to make this an all inclusive process and get the best price possible on installation by signing up as many people as possible.

Please email Paul Higuchi  or Rebecca Su at solarneseattle@yahoo.com if you can help or want to be involved in any capacity.

Hi Joann:  The role of partner that Sustainable NE Seattle would have would be as a potential source of volunteers and participants in the Solarize Seattle project.  What determines whether we are selected?  Good question!  I'm assuming that NW Seed will evaluate the applicants based upon their judgement of the ability of the group to actually succeed in accomplishing their stated mission, goals and plan.

Since previous solarize projects have tended to focus on homeowners, many people such as apartment dwellers, condo owners and renters were not able to participate.  In our application we have stated that we would include information/education/resources on energy conservation, energy efficiency, and community solar so as to be a benefit to the whole community.

 Thanks for asking.

What would be the requirements of being a "partner" in your application for Solarizing? So many things going I only now saw this. What determines whether or not you succeed with the application?

Yikes, sorry, but I can't help before the 5th...we are having a big garage sale tomorrow to raise money for breast cancer, so I'm pretty much tied up until the 5th.

Maybe something in the future?

Oh, and I teach from the SketchUp for Dummies book, so you are halfway there.  You can still sign up for Fall term too :-)

Hi Julie:  Of course I remember you :)

Of course you are most welcome to join the project.  The application is due June 5 and Rebecca and I are working on it now.

BTW I have had The Daniel Tal book and SketchUp for Dummies on my desk for months!  I need your class!

Hi Paul!  I think I know you from the solar tour.  Want some help with Solarize NE Seattle?  I'm teaching a class now at Shoreline CC on using Google SketchUp to do solar site surveys, maybe that could be helpful?

I'm Julie Wilcox, we are at 8178 23rd Ave NE.  We have PV and thermal, visible only in the backyard.
