Magnuson Children's Garden- Spring and Summer fun!

The Magnuson Children's Garden is located inside the park, near the entry to the Community Garden. Built and maintained by volunteers since 2002, it is a vibrant, life-filled space for children and their parents to explore. The volunteers in the Children's Garden Committee will be hosting lots of great events this summer, all of which are fun for the whole family.  You are always welcome to come by to lend a hand in sustaining this garden for an hour or two, or just drop in to enjoy our special event festivities.  We hope to see your smiling face this summer along with your children!  For more info, visit www.magnusonchildrensgarden.blogspot.com

Update on the Gray Whale Garden Eye:

In a joyous celebration last Saturday April 9th, the Whale Garden's "pirate eye patch" was finally removed, to reveal his new mosaic eye!  A grant from Northwest Horticultural Society provided funding for artist Clare Dohna to create a new eye to match the original she created in 2007, and the new eye was greeted with a flag and drum march by children and adults (who says you gotta grow up?), plenty of hip-hip-hoorays, and a musical chorus of Happy Birthday to You!

NEW this year: "Summer Sunset Gardening" with Seattle Works volunteers! Families welcome to enjoy garden exploration and/or help with simple summer tasks.  Tools and gloves and refreshments provided!

  • Wednesday May 18th from 6-8pm
  • Wednesday June 1st from 6-8pm
  • Wednesday July 6th from 6-8pm

5th annual "Summer Fridays in the Garden" Come dance, dig, and explore in the Children's Garden starting at 6:00pm during Free Family Concerts on July 8th & August 12th in the Magnuson Community Garden Amphitheater!  There are additional free concerts in the Amphitheater every Friday from late June - late August, and are all hosted by the amazing and family-friendly Magnuson Community Center.

Fourth annual "Blues for Food Fest" on Saturday September 3rd: a day-long benefit concert for the P-Patch Trust, which supports local food banks, shelters, and hot meals programs.  The Children's Garden will host free gardening fun for the whole family from 12noon-4pm, during the afternoon hours of the concert.

United Way "Day of Caring" Friday September 23rd from 9am-12noon:  Bring your children to join volunteers in fall fun. Tools and gloves and refreshments provided!

2nd annual "Fall Harvest Celebration and Jamboree" on Saturday October 1st:   End the summer season with this giant fall extravaganza, co-hosted by the Magnuson Community Center and Magnuson Community Garden. Orchard maze, pumpkin walk, cider press, scavenger hunt, garden games, and more!

Volunteers are needed at each of these events, and you can choose from a variety of ways to help: guide the volunteers from Seattle Works and other groups, help children explore the garden and worm bin or make nature art projects, help set up refreshments, or other support activities. Please RSVP to magnusonchildrensgarden@gmail.com if you would like to help- and thanks in advance!
