Buy Nothing Northeast Seattle

Do you know about the Buy Nothing Northeast Seattle group on Facebook? It is a marvelous place to post when you have usable things you want to give away, or to ask for something you need. In other words, it's a forum for micro-local gift economy in action. I got rid of a big pile of (useless to me) rocks this week to a guy who was excited to have them for landscaping, and I gave a pair of shelves to a woman who wanted to build steps for her cat. Last month a fellow gave me a…

First Earth video

Check out the video "First Earth" by David Sheen from the Seattle Public Library. It's all about cob architecture. Not how-to, but why-to. It shows people in Ethiopia building traditional homes, and Yemen, as well as the movement in the U.S., England, etc. Even the extra features are great - interviews, slide shows.

I love what your doing about tree canopy and the falcons! Today I had a bird in my yard that I thought was a falcon or a sharp-shinned hawk. I'm just a beginner in bird id, so I could be wrong on both counts... However, I'm pretty sure it was a raptor of some sort - not much bigger than a robin though??? - possibly a juvenile... I'd love to find out more about the Merlin falcons!
